Industry leader recognised with OBE in Birthday Honours List

DavidNewell-portrait-colourThe boss of the trade body which represents national and regional newspaper publishers has been recognised with an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List.

David Newell, left, chief executive of the News Media Association, received the award for services to the newspaper and publishing industry.

David became director of regional press trade body the Newspaper Society in 1997 and director of its national equivalent the Newspaper Publishers Association in 2007 before overseeing a merger of the two organisations to create the NMA in 2014.

Commenting on the honour, he said: “I’m delighted as it recognises the key work of the News Media Association on behalf of the news media industry.”

A solicitor by background, he has worked in academia at Leicester University and has written a number of books and articles on employment law and media law.

As well his NMA role, David serves on a number of industry organisation including the World Association of Newspapers and News Media Europe.
