Hyperlocal newspaper organises gig to back MEN terror attack appeal

GrealishA hyperlocal newspaper organised a benefit concert in aid of a regional daily’s appeal to help the families of terror attack victims.

Egremont 2Day set up the gig following an appeal by the Manchester Evening News for regional newspapers to back its campaign to help those affected by last month’s Manchester Arena attack.

Staff at the monthly free paper, which is based in the Copeland area of Cumbria, organised Copeland Rocks 4 Manchester after hearing the stories of those affected by last month’s atrocity.

Among those to play was Jolan, who has appeared on BBC talent show The Voice.

Editor Rachael Grealish, pictured above left, said: “I saw a shout-out by Rob Irvine, Manchester Evening News’ editor-in-chief, for local papers nationwide to help raise money.

“I then had a member of the community, Donald Eaton, come up to me and ask if we could help fundraise, shortly after the Manchester One Love concert was announced so I thought – why not do a benefit gig here, in Copeland?

“We have so much local talent and I know that we’re a community that always comes together to not only help one another but, we’re also one that will come together to help other communities need.”

The MEN’s appeal, which forms part of a wider fund for the attack’s surviving victims and the families of those who died, has so far raised more than £2.5m.
