Hyperlocal pioneer takes up new job editing consumer news websites

Tom RodgersThe founder of a hyperlocal website which closed after 15 years in business has found a new job editing a series of consumer news websites.

As reported by HTFP last October,  news website Salford Online was closed by editor Tom Rodgers, left, who said the “quality of the news and editorial” had not been matched by revenues.

Now Tom, 34, has taken on a new role as editor at Deals.co.uk, which offers price comparison services about products such as broadband as well as news on telecoms, tech and consumer issues.

He is now based in Huddersfield, where Deals.co.uk has its head office.

Said Tom: “I said wanted to stay in journalism after the closure of SalfordOnline.com so I’m delighted to join a highly-profitable technology brand planning a number of site launches this year.

“I’m hoping to use everything I learned at the sharp end of breaking news and building communities in Salford to build a strong, resilient brand that really resonates with people.”

He added: “Broadband is of crucial importance to the inner workings of the UK economy, especially to small business.

“But the sector has serious problems with customer trust. Despite close attention from Ofcom, ISPs are still selling fibre broadband that isn’t really what they’re promising.”
