Iraq veteran turned sports editor to edit military magazine

Mal RobinsonA former regional daily sports editor and Iraq War veteran has taken a new job editing a military magazine.

Mal Robinson, left, who was head of sport at Trinity Mirror’s North East division ncjmedia, is now editor of Pathfinder International – which provides news for armed forces personnel in resettlement programmes.

Mal spent four months with ncjmedia – where he oversaw sports coverage on Newcastle-based titles The Chronicle, The Journal and Sunday Sun – but left the business in January 2015.

He began his career as a freelance sports writer for various football magazines and match programmes before joining the RAF in 2003 and seeing active service in the two Middle Eastern conflicts.

He takes over at Pathfinder from Michael Brash, who has edited the magazine since it was founded in 1991.

It is currently dispatched monthly to over 25,000 members of the armed forces in and around the UK, while a digital version is available online.

Said Mal: “I am delighted to be taking over this role and continue the excellent work Michael Brash has produced over the years.

“Having been through the resettlement process within the Armed Forces myself, I understand and appreciate how important a service Pathfinder provides to the troops, looking to leave the services and make that jump into civilian life.”
