Ex-regional daily foursome help pen new short story collection

Four former regional daily journalists have seen their work published in a new collection of short stories about Yorkshire.

Tales by the quartet, who all worked at Sheffield daily The Star, have all been included in Grit: New Stories by Yorkshire Writers.

Former Star features editor Philip Andrews, now a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, novelist Neil Fieldhouse, a former political editor, former film critic Michael Yates and former sub-editor John Winter are amoong the writers featured in the book.

Grit contains a foreword by writer and TV personality Ian Clayton who describes the book as tales of “twilight worlds, rites of passage, and longing”.

It contains stories about murder, a mad aunt, an orphan who buys a granny and a fantasy world where being fat is fabulous.

The 180-page paperback will be launched at Sheffield’s Off the Shelf literary festival next month.

Writers will be reading extracts from their stories at Dina Performing Arts, 32A-34 Cambridge St, Sheffield S1 4HP, on Sunday 8 October from 2pm to 4pm.
