Daily relaunches food poverty campaign ahead of summer holidays

Share Your LunchA regional daily has relaunched a campaign to help parents living in poverty to feed their children during the forthcoming summer holidays.

Last year the Liverpool Echo launched its Share Your Lunch campaign, which aims to provide healthy meals for people living in poverty.

The newspaper raised tens of thousands of pounds last year for the cause, and also raised £10,000 to help produce two course meals for 1,500 families on Merseyside on Christmas Day.

Now the Echo has renewed the campaign ahead of the school holidays in association with social enterprise Can Cook, which campaigns against food poverty.

In a message to readers, Echo editor Alastair Machray said: “School meals are a lifeline for many Merseyside mums and dads who are really struggling to make ends meet.

“But from July 21 that lifeline will disappear. And that is why I am asking generous Echo readers to help provide another in its place.

“School holidays should be the happiest times for all of our children – carefree and fun.

“So the thought of kids going hungry and with no fuel in the tank to enjoy the long days and warmer weather with their friends, is truly heartbreaking. Let’s stop it happening.”
