City daily special marks 40 years since historic sporting feat on patch

A city daily has marked 40 years since a historic sporting feat took place on its patch in a special standalone publication.

The Liverpool Echo’s annual Grand National preview supplement is out now, and features a four-page tribute to Red Rum, who in 1977 became the first, and only, horse to win the race for a third time.

The 32-page souvenir, priced at £1, features a guide to the three-day festival at Aintree racecourse, which runs from next Thursday to Saturday.

It also includes features, interviews, facts and figures about the meeting, while racing reporter Chris Wright gives his current top 10 fancies for this year’s race.

Editor Alastair Machray said: “The Echo’s Grand National standalone is very much part of the festival and we’ve done one for as long as I can remember.

“This year is special being 40 years since Red Rum clinched his famous treble.

“We do wonderful digital coverage before, during and after the National but punters in particluar like something tangible to carry around.

“Aintree brings Liverpool and Merseyside to a standstill and we’re proud to play our part.”
