Weekly series marks film festival with special supplement

A weekly newspaper series has marked a city’s first ever film festival by producing a special supplement.

Mid Somerset News & Media has released Wells on Film, a 48-page supplement celebrating the city and surrounding area’s ever growing popularity with film and TV location scouts.

The area has hosted filming for the likes of Hot Fuzz, Doctor Who, The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Robin of Sherwood, Wolf Hall and Z-Cars in the past.

Looking back over the past five decades and right up to the most recent examples, such as The Huntsman: Winter’s War, the special edition contains photos, stories and archive material.

It features memories of local people lucky enough to work as extras with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Johnny Depp and Timothy Dalton, as well as interviews with some of the city’s big film industry personalities and the stars of The Huntsman: Winter’s War.

The supplement, pictured below, went on sale last week ahead of the four-day film festival which concluded yesterday.

Editor Bede MacGowan said: “This special edition is our best yet. It’s a real celebration of the part mid-Somerset has played on the big screen – and the joy that has brought to many local people at the same time, creating some amazing memories that really do last a lifetime.

“Hats off again to our chief sub Andy Vallis and our amateur archivist Clare Blackmore for putting together another fantastic publication.”
