A regional daily web editor cycled 100 miles to raise money for charity.
Bruno Clements, left, of the Swindon Advertiser, was among 26,000 to take part in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey, riding in aid of the British Lung Foundation.
His father Jeff was diagnosed with lung cancer which resulted from skin cancer last summer, but has since made a full recovery.
Bruno described his ride, which took place on 31 July, in a piece for the Advertiser.
He wrote: “I left the Olympic park at about 8.30 on Sunday morning and was soon enjoying nipping through London streets, past landmarks like Trafalgar Square.
“Having the streets free of traffic was a revelation. Suddenly there was a choice of going anywhere in the road avoiding those nasty potholes and no traffic.
“Of course, you have to keep a fairly straight line otherwise there’s the risk of a faster rider running into the back of you but I soon settled into riding slightly to the right of the centre lines, as if on the continent.
“That way faster riders could zip past my right elbow and I could avoid the inexperienced and those moving at a more sedate pace.”
He added: “As the miles ticked by we were soon heading back to central London. A grind up to Wimbledon was helped by cheers from the side of the road giving us the willpower to dig out a bit more oomph.
“I found an extra bit of pace to cope with the headwind along the Embankment and suddenly I was on The Mall, lined by thousands of cheering spectators, and through the finish line with Buckingham Palace in front at the run out area.
“What an incredible end to a superbly staged event. Would I do it again despite all the frustrating stops and my finish time of eight hours and ten minutes much slower than hoped for? Yes, of course – roll on Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 2017.”
