Sunday newspaper to produce one-off digital-only edition

A regional Sunday newspaper is to produce a special online-only edition this weekend to cover a football club’s promotion push.

Plymouth-based title the Sunday Independent will publish the e-edition on its website at the conclusion Plymouth Argyle’s match against Portsmouth on Sunday evening.

The special edition of the sport-led Independent, which will be available for £1, will contain a match report and reaction plus picture coverage and digital-only advertising.

The match between Plymouth and Portsmouth, who are vying for promotion to the third tier of English football through the play-offs, kicks off at 6pm.

The first leg of the two-legged affair, which will see the victor advance to a final at London’s Wembley Stadium, was played yesterday evening and finished 2-2.

The Independent gave Argyle its backing on the front page of last Sunday’s edition, pictured below.

The reference to Star Wars is down to supporters of Hartlepool United, who turned up to Saturday’s game against Argyle en masse sporting Stormtrooper costumes from the film series.

The move was part of a tradition which sees Hartlepool supporters don fancy dress on a certain theme for their final away match of every season.

Independent proprietor Brian Doel said: “Our title has for decades been known and respected as the first and best place to go for sports coverage in the West Country on a Sunday.

“New technology means we can now provide that same level of trusted coverage to big games that take place on other days than Saturday.

“No other newspaper covers sport and leisure in the same way as the Sunday Independent, and we hope that extending our brand online in this way will create more opportunities in the future for readers and advertisers to join our family.”

We’ll be giving particular prominence to the teams’ left wingers, brothers and sisters.

Why on earth bother to do this? Why not just put the content on the website? Suspect this may be driven by commercial features people?
