Soccer ace answers regional daily’s call for Wembley ‘hero’

A regional daily has celebrated after its calls for a football ‘hero’ to step forward were answered.

The Hull Daily Mail ran a front page wraparound yesterday, pictured below, after Hull City won promotion to the Premier League with a win over Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday at London’s Wembley Stadium.

On the front page of Saturday’s edition, the Mail had called for another ‘hero’ to follow in the footsteps of Dean Windass, who propelled City to England’s top flight with a goal at Wembley in 2008.

Mohamed Diamé struck in the 72nd minute of Saturday’s play-off final to repeat City’s feat of eight years ago.

Hull hero

Mail editor Neil Hodgkinson said: “We asked for a Hull City hero to step forward on our Saturday front page. This referred to the legendary strike in the 2008 play-off at Wembley by Dean Windass.

“A few hours and a multiplicity of live blogs, fans’ pictures, tweets galore, Facebook feeding, gnawed fingernails and grey hairs later, we got one in the shape of Mo Diame.

“It was a cracking day, great work by the team, a top result and nice to be able to link the two fronts together.”
