Sister dailies mark ‘historic’ election result with 5am editions

Two sister dailies produced 5am special editions this morning to mark an historic election night.

The Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News both ran the early editions as the Scottish National Party celebrated its third victory in yesterday’s Scottish Parliamentary election.

The SNP fell two seats short of attaining an overall majority, but remain the largest party at Holyrood.

Scotsman editor Ian Stewart congratulated staff on a “huge effort” to produce 5am editions for both of the Johnston Press-owned titles.

He said: “A substantial team worked through the night on our election coverage, from reporters covering counts to journalists live blogging and doing interviews and commentary on Facebook live and then producing 5am editions of both The Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News.

“It was a huge effort and provided brilliant coverage both for digital and print.”

Aberdeen’s Evening Express also ran an extra edition, turning its front page yellow, the primary colour of the SNP, pictured below.

Evening Express editor Alan McCabe said: “Following any election you are competing with every newspaper in the country to grab the readers’ attention. We went for a bright, light front page headline which summed up the national picture.”

This is what professional and focused news teams can and should do. Well done to all involved – a positive story that at least makes a break from the unremitting bad news seen elsewhere in the industry today.

But Dick, you’d be lost without the unremitting bad news to pass judgement on!
