Regional publisher scoops treble at production awards

newsawrads-logo-2016Dundee daily The Courier scooped the Regional Newspaper of the Year prize at last night’s newsawards.

The win was part of a treble for its owner DC Thomson, which also triumphed in the Regional Newspaper of the Year and Printed Innovation of the Year categories at the awards, which celebrate excellence in print and digital production.

Elsewhere there were regional press wins for the Retford Times, which won Weekly Newspaper of he Year, and the Belfast Telegraph, which was awarded Regional Coldset Supplement of the Year for its Weekend publication.

Dirt Bike Rider, a Johnston Press product, won in the Regional Magazine of the Year category.

Gary Cullum, director of newsawards, said: “Newspapers in all their formats have an informative and engaging connection with the reader.

“It is this connection that gives national, regional and local press, in print and online, a fundamental role in delivering advertisers a highly trusted and relevant environment which drives real action.

“The past 20 years of awards have seen our print brands applauded in their many formats. Looking back, our awards reflect a busy, tumultuous, sometimes tortuous but exciting and adventurous 20 years.

“Together we have championed and celebrated the very best in newspaper and news media print, technology and business innovation.”

The Courier’s victory comes after the National Union of Journalists branch at the Leicester Mercury, which won the Regional Newspaper title last year, called for organisers not to consider their employer for the crown in protest at recent photographic cuts.

Digital Innovation of the Year – The Telegraph, new formats. Really? I have just read in Private Eye that there was intense disapproval from readers at these very same things. Anyone care to enlighten me?

Ah yes, Dick. You know JP’s principles. Think digital. Sack 1,000 journalists and think digital! The websites will write themselves.
