Regional daily pays tribute to rugby league’s ‘greatest player’

A regional daily turned its masthead grey and white as part of a front page tribute to rugby league’s “greatest player.”

The Hull Daily Mail mourned the passing of Roger Millward, a member of the sport’s Hall of Fame, who played most notably for Hull Kingston Rovers and Great Britain.

The Mail splashed on his death yesterday, front page pictured below, after devoting extensive coverage online to news of his passing the previous day.

Yesterday’s coverage included an interview with Mr Millward’s widow Carol.

Hull Roger

Mr Millward, who was 68, died after a long battle with cancer aggravated by a jaw injury he suffered in perhaps his greatest triumph, the 1980 Challenge Cup win over city rivals Hull FC in 1980.

The Mail is now supporting calls for a permanent memorial to Mr Millward, dubbed Roger the Dodger, in the city.

Editor Neil Hodgkinson said: “Roger Millward was a rugby league legend in this city and beyond. I am a lifetime RL fan and grew up watching Roger and his contemporaries.

“His sad passing demanded a worthy tribute and that is what we tried to deliver.”
