Regional daily moves into new base after five month delay

Journalists have begun working from a regional daily’s new city centre office after a technical issue delayed the move by five months.

Staff at The Argus, Brighton, are now based at Dolphin House, on Manchester Street, in the city, after leaving their Hollingbury headquarters of 23 years.

HTFP reported earlier this year how the move, which was intended to take place in June, was hampered by issues with getting Dolphin House wired-up correctly in order to accommodate a working newsroom.

Now the move has finally taken place and Monday’s edition was the first to be produced from the new site.

Editor Mike Gilson said: “We had a good run at Hollingbury but it was time to move back into the city centre, to be at the heart of the community we serve.

“The team are still settling in, but Manchester Street feels like it will be a fantastic home for The Argus for many years to come.”

The Argus moved from its offices in North Road, Brighton, to Hollingbury in 1993 following the installation of new presses on the old KTM factory site in 1992.

In 2012, The Argus agreed to sell Hollingbury to Brighton and Hove Bus Company, which planned to demolish half of the current site and create a new depot. However, this did not go ahead.

The decline of the Argus from its peak of 110,000 a day-plus to the present 12,000-odd started soon after its move to a way-out-of town industrial estate on the edge of the South Downs with only sheep for company.
A lot of the stories staff once picked up in local pubs and cafes next to its prominent North Road headquarters dried up, and over the years what was once a fantastic evening paper serving every area of Sussex lost its way and its soul.
This move back to Brighton can only be positive. Just hope they let the remaining few hard-working reporters out of the office now and then.

Did they have to cancel all holiday and days off for that photo?

I was in Brighton recently, flicked through a copy in Tesco, my god, it was terrible.
