Scottish daily marks football victory with poster front page

A poster front adorned a regional daily as it marked an historic football victory.

The Edinburgh Evening News celebrated city side Hibernian’s first Scottish Cup win since 1902 in print and online after the club beat Rangers 3-2 on Saturday.

The EEN covered the win online on Saturday and in print in yesterday’s edition, pictured below.

Coverage included tributes to supporters who had died without seeing the club win the Cup, video of streakers who had apparently lost a pub bet on the outcome of the game, as well as reaction to a pitch invasion at the end of the match which saw rival supporters fighting on the Hampden Park turf.

Online the EEN’s website attracted 220,000 more page views on top of what would normally be expected during a busy weekend.

Deputy editor Euan McGrory said it had been a “huge event” for supporters.

He added: “We wanted to capture the excitement and emotion of the occasion as well as the sense of history in the Edinburgh Evening News.

“The Hibees have had some legendary sides over the years that were never quite able to achieve what the current one has done.

“Similarly, many fans had loved ones that had followed the team all their life without ever getting to see Hibs lift the famous trophy, and Saturday inevitably brought lots of memories flooding back for many of them.

“That’s what we tried to reflect in our wall to wall digital coverage over the weekend and in the 16 pages we devoted to the final and victory parade in Monday’s paper.”

Euan said the victory had also seen a “massive rise” of readers interacting on the newspaper’s social media channels.

He continued: “We have had readers contacting us through Facebook to thank us for our coverage, saying it added to an already fantastic occasion. I hope it isn’t 114 years before we get to do it again.”

    A good job but I wonder…
Did they road test it on social media first?

They probably did, PROVINCIAL. It’s 2016 please remember that and try to live with it.

Probably did but possibly didn’t, Seb.
Why aren’t we seeing alternative fronts that ‘readers’ rejected, which is very 2016.
Perhaps they just know their audience, like good professionals, and know what will go down well without having to ask…
It’s an old-fashioned concept, I agree, but isn’t journalism all about instinctively knowing what to write and how it should be presented?
