Regional daily lands exclusive chat with surviving Beatles

The Liverpool Echo has carried out its first sit-down interview with both Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr since the break-up of the Beatles more than 45 years ago.

The two surviving members of the Fab Four invited entertainment writer Jade Wright to their Abbey Road studios ahead of the release of Ron Howard’s film ‘The Beatles: Eight Days A Week’ which premiered in Liverpool last night.

It was the first time that the Echo had interviewed Paul and Ringo simultaneously since the days when the band were still a foursome.

The scoop was plugged on the front page of yesterday’s paper with a double-page spread inside.

Said Jade: “Working at the Echo for the last 10 years I’ve been lucky to meet some amazing people and get some exciting glimpses behind the scenes.

“Over the years I’ve interviewed Paul and Ringo seperately a few times, but I didn’t think I’d ever get the chance to talk to them together – let alone at Abbey Road in Studio 2.

“It was incredibly generous of them to invite us down – particularly as the only newspaper there. I sat in the canteen at Abbey Road with John Bishop and Simon Mayo waiting to go in and Giles Martin came in for his lunch.

“It was a brilliant and surreal day, made all the better by the fact they’d invited us specifically, and the importance they placed on the Liverpool ECHO, their hometown paper.”

The film chronicles the band’s rise to fame, as well as the toll it eventually took, prompting them to stop touring for good in 1966.
