Naval city to host 2016 journalism skills conference

Portsmouth has been announced as the venue for this year’s biggest journalism training gathering.

The naval city, which has two NCTJ-accredited journalism training centres, is to host this year’s Journalism Skills Conference.

The two-day event, organised by the National Council for the Training of Journalists, will take place on 24 and 25 November and will be split between the two accredited centres.

The first day will take place at the city’s Highbury College and the second day at the University of Portsmouth.

Delegates will stay at the Ibis Portsmouth hotel with the annual Awards for Excellence dinner taking place at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, including a tour of the HMS Alliance, pictured above.

Thes conference will feature a discussion about ethics in the media, digital reporting from inside court, and digital data and mobile journalism masterclasses.

There will also be a debate about how the accreditation standard should evolve to reflect the radical changes made to the structure and content in the Diploma in Journalism.

Joanne Butcher, NCTJ chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to be holding the Journalism Skills Conference at two of our best performing centres.

“The conference is a fantastic opportunity to explore new technologies and discuss the ever-evolving skillsets journalists need to succeed in the industry.”

To book online, please see the event page on the NCTJ website.

AS DELEGATES will be visiting HMS Alliance it might come as a surprise to them when they discover the A-class submarine (on which I am proud to serve as a volunteer guide every Sunday) is actually in Gosport, She is part of the NMRN but, like Explosion, the museum for Naval firepower, on the opposite side of Portsmouth Harbour to the city where the conference is taking place. Alliance is also the mascot on The Gosport Globe’s masthead and anyone wanting to find her can click on the picture by visiting http://www.gosportglobe.uk and take a virtual tour of the various sites.
