Monopoly makers honour regional daily with ‘Fleet Street’ square

The makers of Monopoly have honoured a regional daily by giving it the ‘Fleet Street’ square on its patch’s edition of the board game.

The Colchester Daily Gazette will occupy the square in the Colchester edition of the game, which was launched earlier this month.

The Gazette is one of 30 institutions in the Essex town to feature on the board.

The holders of each space were decided by Winning Moves, which produces Monopoly in the UK.

Dominic Bowers, Gazette head of content, said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to be named as the Fleet Street of Colchester’s Monopoly board.

“It is incredibly exciting for such a famous board game to creating an entire edition for the town and we are very happy to be a part of it.”

Earlier this year, the Stratford Herald successfully campaigned for Stratford-upon-Avon to be given its own version of the game, and was awarded the Fleet Street square as a result.

Other regional newspapers to occupy the space in their patch’s version of the game include the MK News, Kentish Gazette and the Express & Star, Wolverhampton.

It’s a good publicity stunt, guaranteed to get coverage.
Is there a penalty for landing on the square? Something along the lines of: Do not pass Go, collect your P45 on the way out?
