Journalism student to walk Jarrow March route in reverse

Corinne MacdonaldA journalism student is set to walk the route of the Jarrow Marchers in reverse – interviewing people along the way.

Corrine Macdonald, left, will walk for three weeks from London to Jarrow, asking people along the route whether the Northern Powerhouse initiative has made an impact on their lives.

Her project coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Jarrow March, which saw around 200 men walk from the North-East of England to London to petition the Government on the re-establishment of industry in their town.

Their 26-day march concluded on 4 November 1936, when an 11,000-signature petition was presented to the House of Commons.

Corinne’s project forms part of her Masters degree in Arts and Lifestyle Journalism at London College of Communication.

The 24-year-old, who is originally from Scarborough, said: “I am just about to graduate and leave London after seven years and am really hopeful that I will find work back home up North.

“I’ll be interviewing designers, filmmakers, journalists and writers.”

Her walk begins next Monday and aims to arrive in Jarrow on 24 September.

Errrm… call me a crusty old cynic if you will, but if you want to gauge the impact of an economic regeneration scheme would it not make sense to widen your scope a bit?
