Joint sporting celebration prompts weekly special supplement

A joint sporting celebration prompted a weekly newspaper to produce a special supplement.

The Folkestone Herald ran the supplement marking local football club Folkestone Invicta’s promotion, as well as manager Neil Cugley’s 1,000th game in charge of the team.

Invicta have been promoted as champions of the Isthmian League Division One South to the league’s Premier Division, which is the seventh level of English football.

The special pull-out, pictured below, was published in the current edition and was touted by sports editor Jon Phipps after the club told him about the approaching milestone around a month ago.

Reporter Sam Inkersole interviewed people involved with the club, including ex-players, current players, Neil Cugley’s step-son and even Folkestone’s well-known canine supporter Ari.

Designer Alex Leys came up with the front cover, and Jon laid out all of the pages.

Said Jon: “It’s a great milestone for a local football legend to have reached 1,000 games in charge of one club, and even more special for Neil that it has happened in a season where his side have won the league.

“After losing in the play-offs in the past four seasons, Invicta have always looked like the best team in the league and it’s great that they have finally been able to secure promotion back to the Isthmian League Premier Division. We were happy to be able to produce a pull-out commemorating both of these achievements.”

Invicta thanked the Herald for the supplement in a statement on the club’s website.

It reads: “Many thanks to Sam Inkersole and all at the Folkestone Herald for the excellent pull-out regarding our success this season, and Neil’s 1,000 games as manager. Our recent media coverage from most outlets has been outstanding and if you’ve not seen today’s Herald make sure you do so.”

Good to see the paper going the extra mile on a really positive story in the town. They even had senior editor Rebecca Smith in the bar at half-time on Saturday flogging papers to fans as they filed in looking for a pint. Good effort all round.
