Island daily revives liberation anniversary edition

An island daily commemorated its patch’s liberation from the Nazis with a second special edition in as many years.

Last year the Jersey Evening Post ran a Liberation Day special on 9 May, marking 70 years since the island was freed.

The edition was so popular, the Post decided to repeat the feat this year with more human interest pieces from people who lived under occupation on the island in the Second World War.

The Germans had invaded the Channel Islands on 30 June 1940, making them the only part of the British Isles to be occupied during the war.

On 9 May 1945, HMS Beagle landed on the island to accept the surrender of the occupying forces.

Last year’s edition contained reproductions of front pages which were published just before and just after the liberation.

Carl Walker, Post deputy editor, said: “As it was so popular, with locals and tourists alike, we decided to print again this year, despite the fact Liberation Day is a bank holiday here in Jersey.

“This year we featured lots of powerful human interest pieces from those who were here at the time and early indications are that it was another popular edition for us.”
