Former business journalist who began at regional daily dies at 66

Tom McGhieA national newspaper’s former senior business correspondent who began his career in the regional press has died aged 66.

Tom McGhie, pictured left, spent 12 years in the role for the Mail on Sunday before retiring in 2012, and reported on business for more than 40 years.

His career began on the Birmingham Post, and he later worked for The Herald, Glasgow, during a career which saw him spend time as a foreign correspondent in Moscow.

In 1992 he became city editor of the Daily Express, and began working for the Mail on Sunday in 1999.

An obituary on the Mail’s This Is Money website states: “McGhie was one of the most experienced journalists and editors in his field.

“He reported on some of the biggest business and industrial stories – from the miners’ strike in the 1980s to the recent fracking and shale gas boom.

“McGhie was an invaluable mentor to younger colleagues and demonstrated an enduring passion for an exclusive story.”

Tom passed away on 2 March.
