A football fan who threatened two regional daily journalists after his team were relegated at the hands of their local rivals has been sentenced to community service.

A court heard Dundee United supporter Robert Cargill, left, shouted at two journalists from The Courier before grabbing a lighting unit from a video camera and smashing it on the ground.

The incident took place in front of police officers after United lost to local rivals Dundee FC on 2 May, which sealed their relegation from the Scottish Premiership.

The two journalists, who have not been named, were filming and interviewing people close to Dundee FC’s Dens Park stadium at the time.

A witness said: “He seemed pretty distraught about a football team being relegated … After he grabbed the light he threw it on the floor and smashed it.

“He then tussled with a security guard but not before threatening the pair of them. He was with his son at the time who was pretty upset when he realised his dad was getting lifted.”

A video of the incident is available on the Courier’s website.

Cargill, 47, of Balunie Crescent, Dundee, pleaded guilty on summary complaint to a charge under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

Sheriff Alastair Carmichael imposed a community payback order with 60 hours of unpaid work to be completed in three months.

Strange, he looks like a man not only for breeding, but of great wit and segacity.

Why would you let something like football, which you can’t control in the slightest, affect your emotions?

Why do we persist with experiments on animals when there’s material like this available?
