Former daily journalist publishes book on city life during war

Peter WaltersA book on city life during the First World War has been published by a former regional daily journalist.

Peter Walters, left, who used to work at the Coventry Telegraph, has written ‘Great War Coventry’ after sifting through hundreds of newspaper articles, official reports and memos for research.

The book describes how Coventry was called the ‘busiest town in England’ due to its manufacturing industry, with the war years laying the foundation for the city to bolster that reputation.

He wrote the book in association with Coventry Culture which runs the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, the Coventry Transport Museum and the Lunt Roman Fort.

Said Peter: “We all know about Coventry’s ordeal in the Second World War but the city’s Great War story has not been told enough.

“As we are commemorating the tragedy of the Somme, it seems appropriate to look at what was happening on the home front too. And Coventry has a remarkable tale to tell.”

The book was launched on 1 July, marking 100 years since the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

It is priced at £12.99 and published by The History Press.
