The masthead of a regional daily has changed colours for a day to give its patch’s biggest football club a promotion push.
The Argus, Brighton, amended the masthead on Friday’s edition, pictured below, to reflect the blue and white colours of Brighton & Hove Albion.
Albion will be promoted to the Premier League, England’s top division, with a win over Middlesbrough tomorrow.
However, any other result at the latter’s Riverside stadium will see them promoted instead, with Albion consigned to compete in the play-offs.
Editor Mike Gilson said: “The city has really caught Albion fever and the club itself called on everyone to make Friday Blue and White day.
“It seemed the natural thing to do to change the masthead blue and white and have the famous seagull soaring above it.
“Our sports team has done a magnificent job in capturing our rise this season. Here’s hoping for tomorrow.”
The Argus ran a 12-page match preview inside today’s edition, which also carried an advertisement offering good luck to Albion from a Charlton Athletic supporters group called the Coalition Against Roland Duchelet.
CARD, a protest group against the London club’s owner, asked The Argus to carry the good luck message, pictured above, as a ‘thank you’ to Albion supporters who backed its recent demonstration against Duchelet.
Sorry. Awful front. Too serious.
But the thought was there.

The Argus is on the edge of the cliff with refererence to the papers survival, if they go up the paper will suffer in sales, far far better coverage in nationals, I bet they are really hoping they don’t, slight peak in sales if they do, huge huge slump after, then it will go weekly which might be a blessing in disguise for the future of it, but of course huge job cuts yet again, but that equates to more profits for Newsquest £££
