City farm saved thanks to regional daily appeal

A city farm threatened with closure has been saved thanks to a regional daily’s appeal.

The Edinburgh Evening News launched its Save Our Farm campaign after spiralling running costs and a slump in external funding left the Gorgie City Farm on the brink of ruin.

But following the appeal readers have raised £100,000 to keep the attraction afloat.

Readers even undertook challenges such as walking on hot coals to raise money and the campaign’s success was revealed on Friday’s front page, pictured below.

Deputy editor Euan McGrory said: “The farm is greatly loved across Edinburgh, not just because of the many happy childhood memories it evokes for thousands of people, but for the valuable on-going educational work it does.

“As soon as we heard its future was at risk, we knew that our readers would want to help.

“Where we were able to make a difference was in the way we were able to engage our readers over the course of six weeks with a mixture of traditional storytelling, video and an active campaign on social media.”

John Teasdale, vice-chairman of the farm’s board, added: “The Evening News has played a key role in bolstering our campaign by keeping this in the news.

£Without the paper’s support, we would have struggled to hit our target. The first couple of days of a campaign like this are easy but maintaining that momentum isn’t and the Evening News has helped significantly with that.”
