Abuse victims to make compensation claim after daily’s investigation

Victims of alleged abuse at a mental hospital are to claim compensation after more than 50 people came forward to a regional daily.

As reported on HTFP in March, the Derby Telegraph’s exclusive investigation into experiments on children at Aston Hall Hospital led to dozens of former patients sharing claims of abuse at the hands of Dr Kenneth Milner in the 1960s and 1970s.

Twelve of Dr Milner’s alleged victims are now taking their case to the Department for Health, with investigations also being conducted by the police and NHS.

In the Telegraph’s initial story, pictured below, former patients claimed they were restrained by Dr Milner and given high doses of tranquilisers, while some allege he sexually abused them.

Dr Milner died in 1976, after retiring the previous year from a career in which he also worked at institutions including Broadmoor and Rampton.

The Telegraph’s investigation led to the allegations being raised in Parliament, with then-Prime Minister David Cameron encouraging people to come forward and give evidence to the inquiries.

Editor Steve Hall told HTFP: “We continue to uncover allegations of truly sickening abuse. That these are centred upon a hospital which was supposed to be helping young children is even more appalling.

“We are determined to press on with our investigation and to chase progress on the inquiries set in motion by both the police and health authorities.”
