Weekly chief reporter takes up editorship of hometown sister paper

Tom WrightA weekly’s chief reporter has been appointed to take on the editorship of its sister title, on whose patch he grew up.

Tom Wright, pictured left, has taken up the reins at the North Somerset Times after former editor Samantha Brindle left the newspaper in June.

Tom had previously served as chief reporter on its Archant sister title the Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury.

He had been seconded to the editor’s role at the Times since Samantha’s departure, but has now been confirmed as her successor on a full-time basis.

Group editor Simon Angear said: “Tom has worked in the Weston newsroom for the past four years, and has impressed us throughout that time with his commitment, creativity and integrity.

“Crucially, he grew up in the Times patch, so understands its issues and characters, while he is also a talented journalist who understands the expectations of our newsroom and our company.

“I have full confidence that he will prove a big success in the role, and his contribution will help ensure the Times goes on to enjoy further successes in the future.”

Tom said: “I am absolutely delighted to be confirmed as the new North Somerset Times editor.

“It is a very proud moment for me – not only to be trusted with my first editorship – but it also gives me a chance to focus on the area I grew up in and the place I call my home.

“Outgoing Times editor Samantha Brindle did a fantastic job in growing the paper over a number of years, meaning it is a great position to continue being highly successful in the future.

“I look forward to continue to work alongside colleagues from all departments in Weston over the coming weeks, months and years and ensuring the Times remains the much-loved and respected paper it has grown to be.”
