Suspect quizzed by detectives over weekly photographer assault

Rotherham courtA man has been questioned by detectives over an alleged racist assault on a weekly photographer.

As previously reported on HTFP, Rotherham Advertiser photographer Steve Mettam was attacked outside Rotherham Magistrates’ Court earlier this month.

Steve was left with an injured shoulder after the attack, in which he was called a “f***ing white d***head”.

The assault took place on Tuesday 7 July near the court, pictured above left, where one of the suspects in the case is said to have pushed Steve into fencing.

The paper reported the incident to South Yorkshire Police.

Editor Andrew Mosley said at the time his staff were entitled to do their jobs “while being treated with respect and without fear of being assaulted”.

A piece in Friday’s Advertiser reads: “A man suspected of assaulting Advertiser photographer Steve Mettam outside Rotherham Magistrates’ Court after a hearing when several defendants faced child sex abuse charges, has been questioned by police.

“The Advertiser understands the case has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration.”
