ABCs: Sunday newspaper posts sales increase of 15.5pc

A Scottish Sunday newspaper was the only paid-for weekly title to record a circulation rise, according to the ABC figures published today.

The Sunday Herald has posted a circulation increase of 15.5pc year-on-year to 29,009 for the period January to June this year, continuing a spate of sales rises after it backed Scottish independence ahead of last September’s referendum.

In the last set of ABC figures, released in February for the second half of last year, the Newsquest title posted a circulation rise of 34.7pc making it the best-performing title in the UK.

Its sales increases contrast sharply with those of rival Johnston Press title Scotland on Sunday, whose average circulation for the first half of 2015 fell by 20.3pc to 24,142 – making it the worst-performing of the weekly titles.

Of the weekly titles across the UK, only 39 in total have had their full figures published today because most of the big regional publishers opt for annual figures, which were released in February.

Of the paid-for titles, the Bridgnorth Journal was among the worst-performing with a decrease of 10.5pc, as was the Newry Reporter with a decline of 9.9pc.

A number of free weeklies increased their circulations, including seven Bullivant Media titles in the Midlands, who topped the list.

They included the Bromsgrove Standard with an increase of 18.7pc to 37,471 and the Evesham Observer with a rise of 12.2pc to 15,387.

Here are the figures for all Sunday and weekly paid-for titles, which have been published today, ranked by order of year-on-year circulation change.

Surely free newspaper don’t have circulation figures? These figures tell you nothing. Publishers can halve or double the distribution overnight, providing readers and advertisers with no indication of how well received the newspaper is.
