Souvenir magazine celebrates weekly freesheet’s golden anniversary

A special magazine celebrating the 50th anniversary of a weekly freesheet series has gone on sale.

The News Shopper, based in South-East London, has released the souvenir to commemorate the milestone – featuring pieces on the history of the paper, past campaigns and the more light-hearted stories to have appeared on its pages in the past five decades.

As reported on HTFP in February, James Bond actor Sir Roger Moore was among the celebrities to wish the Shopper a happy golden anniversary.

The magazine, front cover pictured below, is out now and priced at £2.

News Shopper 50

Shopper news editor Dan Keel, who edited the magazine, told HTFP: “This is a wonderful opportunity for our readers to grab a colourful summary of the news in the area over the last 50 years and to learn more about Shopper’s roots.

“The magazine is bright and bubbly – we take a look back at our funnier stories and include a beautiful feature about couples who have found love through News Shopper.

“But we also delve deep into the archives. There is a contribution from historian Bob Ogley who takes a look back at 1965 – the year Shopper was born – and we bring readers a huge gallery of nostalgic photographs of south-east London and north Kent comparing ‘then’ with ‘now’.

“We are hugely proud of this product and would urge people to get in there quick while stocks last.”

Spitfires on the cover? Wondering why.

Apparently the editorial staff finished work on this a couple of days before Newsquest announced they were closing the News Shopper newsroom and making people redundant. Now that’s a classy touch!
