Sister dailies to launch new-look football supplements

Two new football supplements are being launched by a pair of sister dailies to coincide with the start of the new season.

The Express & Star, Wolverhampton, and the Shropshire Star will release their first eight-page Kick-Off supplement tomorrow, with what is described as “opinion-led” coverage of the clubs they cover – Wolves, West Brom, Aston Villa, Walsall, Shrewsbury Town and AFC Telford.

It will also feature stories on the lighter side of football and include quizzes.

On Monday, the MNA-owned titles will also print Final Whistle, a 12-page supplement featuring in-depth match reports and analysis, as well as fan columns.

The editorial team will link up with our digital team to include online fan reaction.

Former soccer stars including Kevin Phillips, Johnny Giles and Steve Bull will feature in the pull-outs.

Express & Star editor Keith Harrison said: “We’ve undergone a transformation on our sportsdesk in recent months and there’s a fresh enthusiasm among the team. We’ve re-organised our structure and switched a few things around.

“Credit must go to new sports editor Russell Youll and his deputy Derek Bish, who have made a huge impact since joining earlier this year.

“These new supplements will give readers a fresh perspective on their teams, as well as the expert opinions of Kevin Phillips, Johnny Giles and Steve Bull.

“Everyone is geared up for the new season in print and online. It feels like a new era getting under way and we can’t wait to get started.”
