Regional press duo up for financial journalism honours

Two regional journalists will find out next week whether they have been successful in winning awards for financial reporting.

Bristol Post assistant editor Gavin Thompson and Simon Bain, who serves as business correspondent at The Herald, Glasgow, have both been nominated in the Santander Financial Media Awards.

Gavin is up for the SME/Enterprise Journalist of the Year and Simon is nominated for the Contribution to Personal Finance Education honour.

The duo are the only two journalists from the regional press to feature on the shortlist.

Journalists from national titles as well as trade publications also feature.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London next Wednesday.

Said Simon of his nomination: ” It’s good to see one or two flags flying for the regional press in these troubling times.”

Gavin added: “I’m proud to be representing Bristol and flying the flag for the regional press up against colleagues from the nationals at these awards.

“Strong regional media plays an important role in supporting vibrant towns and cities. Bristol is a fantastic place to write about business because it has such a diverse range of companies and industries ranging from a start-up making 3D printed robot hands for amputees to some of the top law firms and plenty more besides.

“We do our best to reflect all of that in the Bristol Post business pages, with a particular focus on small and medium sized enterprises so to be nominated in the SME category is brilliant.”
