Champion boxer fights regional journalist in charity bout

A regional daily reporter and amateur boxer took on a former Commonwealth champion in the ring as part of his newspaper’s charity campaign.

Peter Warzynski, of the Leicester Mercury, fought Rendall Munroe as part of the 30 For 30 fundraising campaign, which is being run by the paper with local hospice Loros.

Peter was one of 30 challengers to take on Munroe in exchange for a £5 donation to the charity during a continuous sparring session.

During his career, Munroe won the European and Commonwealth super bantamweight titles.

Peter wrote of his two minutes with the champion: “I did the first round with Rendall, preferring to get my go out of the way so I could concentrate on enjoying the rest of the day.

“During the bout, I thought I did okay – but watching the footage back I could see Rendall was barely out of first gear.

“Occasionally he stepped it up and drove one home – mostly into my nose.”

The challenge was undertaken as part of the 30 For 30 campaign, which has encouraged readers to mark the 30th anniversary of Loros by either raising £30 or doing 30 things for the charity during September.

Peter told HTFP: “Rendall is a great guy and somewhat of a fund-raising whirlwind in Leicester so it was great to be involved in something he was doing.

“Despite the bruised nose, I had a great time. It’s not every day you come to blows with a professional boxer.”
