Regional daily moves to new town centre home after 98 years

A regional daily has moved to new town centre offices after nearly 100 years at its old home.

The Burton Mail has moved from its High Street base of 98 years to a new home at Milton House, in Worthington Way, where will be based from today.

The Local World-owned title moved to its High Street offices in 1917 from Horninglow Street, where it spent its first 19 years, and has been based there ever since.

In a story about the new premises, Mail editor Emma Turton said she hoped the move would put the paper at the heart of its community.

She said: “Our new home is a fresh, vibrant and modern building that is right in the centre of the town.

“Ensuring that we put ourselves right in the middle of the area that we serve was a pivotal decision and one that reflects the community ethos that we have at the Mail.

“Although we all cannot wait for the move to our modern new offices, there will, of course, be sadness as we leave behind 98 years of history.

“But that history will live on through our daily paper and our 24/7 news coverage online.

“The move secures our future in the town, ensures we become a focal point in the town centre and will allow us to create even more years of history for all involved.”

The title has now put together its final edition from its former High Street base, which closed for the last time on Wednesday.

The Burton Mail was relaunched in April with a new look, new sections and a cover price rise of five pence to 55p. It also urged its readers to submit more content.

‘Vibrant’ seems to be taking over from ‘exciting’ as the favoured buzz word of the puff merchants.
