Pro-independence daily launches new Saturday edition

The National

A pro-independence Scottish daily created last year is launching a new Saturday edition this weekend.

The National was launched by Newsquest’s Herald and Times Group last November, aimed at Scots who were in favour of leaving the United Kingdom.

Now the title is creating a permanent Saturday edition, in addition to its Monday to Friday ones, following on from a special election edition published last Saturday.

Its print title, picture left, hit the streets last November before a companion website went live in March.

The National tweeted: “Great response to our first Saturday edition last weekend … So we’re doing it again … Every week!”

The newspaper was one of the few regional titles to come out in support of a political party before the general election, unsurprisingly backing the SNP.

As well as showing renewed faith in print, The National has also been in the vanguard attempts to monetise newspapers’ online offerings.

Its  metered paywall allows users to view five articles per month without charge and a further five once they complete a free registration process, while subscribers can sign up for a year for £64.99.
