Photographer turned sub produces coastal picture book

Steve BA glossy book of coastal photography, shot by a regional daily sub-editor, has been published.

Steve Belasco, who worked as a staff photographer at the Dorset Echo from 1993 to 2001 before turning his hand to subbing at the Weymouth-based title, produced Dorset From The Sea in his spare time.

Steve, pictured left, has been working on the book for the past four years, taking pictures from aboard his own motor boat.

The coffee table-style book documents a cruise from Lyme Regis to Old Harry Rocks, near Poole, with views of Dorset’s coastal waters and also the people and animals found along the way.

The foreword is provided by record-breaking yachtswoman Dame Ellen MacArthur, with whom Steve became friends after he photographed her during her first solo sail around Great Britain.

A proportion of the book’s proceeds will be donated to Dam Ellen’s cancer trust for young people recovering from the disease.

A promotional video to accompany the book launch has also been released.

Said Steve: “There are plenty of pictures featuring Dorset’s astonishing coastline from land and even from the air, but we think this is the first book to be shot entirely from water level.

“It’s the best way to see the Jurassic Coast, after all the sea created it, but most people never get that opportunity.

“Hence the book; I wanted to share those views with as many people as possible.”

Dorset From The Sea, ISBN 9781845847623, is published by Veloce Books and is available from bookshops and online.

I’ve no doubt that this book will be full of first-class photography from a very talented exponent of the art of imagery.

Steve, or “Bertie” as we knew him, was the pictorial rock on which the fledgling Nottingham Trader – Britain’s biggest provincial free newspaper at the time – was anchored when it set sail in choppy waters back on March 10, 1982.

All the best with your book, Steve.
