Daily questioned over name following overnight switch

A Member of the Scottish Parliament has asked whether a regional daily newspaper should consider changing its name following its switch to overnight printing.

Malcolm Chisholm, MSP for Edinburgh Northern and Leith, took to Twitter to pose the question about the Edinburgh Evening News.

The move by the EEN had been announced in December as part of changes arising from the merger of operations with its Johnston Press stablemates The Scotsman and Scotland on Sunday.

It was previously available at newsstands from around 11.30am.

Chisholm

Posting on the social networking site, Mr Chisholm wrote: “Great to get the Edinburgh Evening News at 6.30 in the morning from this week but should it change its name?”

At the time of the announcement JP said there were no plans to drop ‘Evening’ from the newspaper’s name.

Around 35 to 45 jobs were due to be axed as a result of the merger, which has also seen a new managerial structure introduced.

JP said the move to overnight printing at the EEN was made in line with similar changes across both the company and the industry in general.

During an online chat with last month, Yorkshire Evening Post editor Jeremy Clifford, said there was “very little” news that was missed as a result of printing overnight after a reader implored him to return to being a same-day publication.

The EEN has yet to respond to a request from HTFP for a comment on Mr Chisholm’s tweet.

How can Clifford say very little news is missed by printing one edition overnight?
It’s that sort of arrogant, treat-the-readers-as-idiots attitude that has seen the circulation slump to such low levels.
Even a child could see that if a plane crashed on the centre of Leeds today it wouldn’t be in the YEP unti ltomorrow.
And perhaps JP should be taken to task by the Trades Description people over the retention of Evening in their titles when they are so clearly not.

Easy and honest; Edinburgh Daily News.
At least papers like the old Evening Argus at Brighton (Newsquest) were straight enough to drop the Evening bit when they dropped multi edition evening sales and eventually hit the streets with a single edition in the morning.
Why keep up the fiction JP?
Anyone know if Trade Descriptions Act applies?

Same sorry score at Carlisle News & Star, lucky they dropped the word ‘Evening’ a few years back. But really, does it matter? If you want up to date news, you head for a digital platform don’t you? Whatever time a paper is printed, by the time you read it the story will have moved on. Hence the demise of newspapers. Now if websites and such still call themselves ‘Evening’ or ‘Morning’ that’s a bit barmy…..
