More than 40 MPs sign newspaper closure EDM

More than 40 MPs have now signed an early day motion opposing the closure of local newspapers.

As reported on HTFP last month, members tabled the motion to voice their regret at the closure of seven newspapers in the South of England by Trinity Mirror.

A total of 41 MPs have now put their name to it – with the majority representing the Labour Party.

The NUJ yesterday urged its 16,000 Twitter followes to get their MP to sign the motion.

The EDM also backs the union’s call for “a short, sharp cross-party and inter-departmental government inquiry into securing a future for the industry, in order to protect the public interest and defend jobs in quality local journalism”.

Bit late in the game, boys and girls.
Cynically, they have nothing to lose by backing petition. Everything to lose by not having papers to spout their lop-sided view of life!

You’d almost think a general election was coming up.

    Oh.
