Regional journalist receives third award nomination in a month

A regional daily journalist has been nominated for a third media award within a month after appearing on the shortlist of the Asian Media Awards.

Aasma Day of the Lancashire Evening Post will compete with TV and radio journalists for the Regional Journalist of the Year title at the awards.

Those competing to win the prize include Arif Ansari from BBC North West, Emb Hashmi from BBC Radio Derby and Sangeeta Bhabra of ITV Meridian.

It is Aasma’s third shortlist nomination within a month, having also been recognised in charity Mind’s 2015 Media Awards and in the Specialist Reporter category in the O2 North West Media Awards – an award she won last year.

Said Aasma: “It is a real honour to be shortlisted in the Regional Journalist of the Year category at the Asian Media Awards 2015. I think it is important to highlight the work of journalists from all walks of life, cultures and backgrounds in mainstream media.

“Having seen some of the talented people on the shortlist in the various categories, I think it is great that these awards inspire young people from all ethnic backgrounds to follow a career in the media if that is their dream rather than the more traditional professions such as medicine and law.”

The Asian Media Awards will be presented at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate on 29 October.

Also featured on the awards shortlist is Kiran Kaur, a reporter and newsreader with the KM Group, working for the company’s kmfm radio station, who has been nominated for the Oustanding Young Journalist prize.

Previous recipients of an Asian Media Award include Krishnan Guru-Murthy, Waris Hussein, Nina Wadia and Anita Anand.
