Investigative journalist turned trainer joins university’s team

Paul by Mills small high resOne of the UK’s foremost investigative journalists has joined the University of Sussex to lead its growing journalism team.

Former national newspaper journalist Paul Lashmar, left, has moved from Brunel University in West London where he was subject lead in journalism.

Said Paul: “Journalism is a developing subject at Sussex and I look forward to helping to create an exciting and dynamic environment for our students. We are committed to high-quality and radically questioning journalism.

“I bring the same enthusiasm for journalism that I had when I started out and hope to inspire our students to be the thinking, inquisitive and ethical journalists of the future. I already feel at home in Sussex’s unique learning environment.”

Professor Tim Jordan, the Head of the School of Media, Film and Music at Sussex, said: “We are delighted that Paul has joined us, bringing a rare combination of world-leading research and excellence in journalism. We expect him to help us to continue build Sussex’s particular approach to journalism that combines leading research with practical journalism skills.”

Paul will be teaching on the University’s undergraduate and postgraduate journalism courses.  It has 80 journalism studentsa at its campus in Falmer.

Other recent journalism job moves include:

  • Sky News has appointed John-Paul Ford Rojas as business producer. He joins from the Press Association where he served as chief city reporter.
  • Patrick Daly has left his role as political correspondent at the Plymouth Herald
  • Camden New Journal has appointed Ella Jessel as a reporter. Ella was previously the news editor at Hackney Citizen.
  • Scott Broom has joined the Burton Mail as a trainee, focusing mainly on the paper’s website and social media channels.
