‘Increased costs’ blamed for daily’s cover price rise

A daily newspaper has put up its cover price by 10p citing “increased costs” as the reason.

Glasgow-based title The Herald is now priced at £1.30 on newsstands, an increase of 10p.

The rise, which came into effect on Monday, was revealed in that day’s edition of the Newsquest-owned title.

It is the first increase in the price of the paper since August 2013.

A spokesman for Newsquest subsidiary the Herald & Times Group said: “The newsstand price of The Herald was raised on Monday by 10p to £1.30 due to increased costs faced by the company but readers can take advantage of a special 90p subscription offer.

“The cover price was last raised in August 2013, and since then the newspaper has delivered improvements across all areas of the title  and offers what we believe is the best journalism in Scotland.

“More people paid to read The Herald in print and online last year than in 2013 and we are confident that trend will continue as readers acknowledge the value and quality of our content.”

In October, a voluntary redundancy scheme was opened up to all 160 staff at the group’s titles – which also includes fellow Glasgow daily the Evening Times and Sunday stablemate the Sunday Herald.

Among those to leave as a result have been Gordon Thomson, a general reporter at the Evening Times for the past 25 years who also served as FoC at the group’s NUJ chapel, and Christian Cookesy, who held a dual picture desk and photographer role.

Donald Cowey, The Herald’s sports editor of 13 years, also opted to take VR.
