Viral newspaper bill denounced as hoax by regional daily

A prank featuring a regional daily bill went viral on Twitter leading the newspaper to publicly deny its involvement in the “arguably hilarious” hoax.

An image of the bill, featuring what appeared to be an unfortunate sexual innuendo on the part of The Courier, Dundee, was posted this morning from an account called Rob The Bruce.

Former Liverpool and Germany footballer Dietmar Hamann was among those to retweet the apparent mishap.

However The Courier soon picked up on the hoax, posting from its own account that the bill, pictured below, had been tampered with.

Dundee blow

The post reads: “Much as we applaud and indeed champion creativity it is our solemn(ish) duty to point out this bill has been doctored.”

The prank has been traced to an A-Board outside a newsagent in Blackness Road, Dundee.

Dave Lord, Courier assistant editor, told HTFP: “Here at The Courier we have a long and proud tradition of championing creativity. However, this was absolutely not our work.

“It would seem one wag outside one single newsagent on Blackness Road in Dundee has got handy with a pair of scissors and, having cut out the word ‘jobs’ and ‘blow’, pasted them back together the other way round with (arguably) hilarious consequences.”

Childish. But funny. And boy, do we need a laugh these days.

I least it is sort of funny. Some of the bills where I live are a month old and JP staff don’t seem to know about what poor public relations this is.
