Radio presenter and former news editor of Sky News Nick Ferrari has paid tribute to the ‘crucial’ work of Britain’s independent news agencies.
Speaking at the NAPAs – the National Association of Press Agencies annual awards – he said their role remained paramount in a complex media world.
“In theory, awards ceremonies are about winners and losers. But there are no losers in this room, only journalists and photographers who are extremely good at what they do,” he said.
“You are the people who every day fill the pages of newspapers and magazines and provide the talking points for broadcasters.I and many others in this industry are hugely appreciative of what you do.’
Nick, now a presenter on LBC, said he was ‘born to be an agency reporter’ and as a schoolboy regularly filed to the nationals on behalf of his father Dan’s Kent-based agency, which still carries the Ferrari name.

He’s right there. After what’s been going on in the regions, and indeed on some nationals, the agencies will be the only ones left doing any reporting at all.

News agencies do outstanding work, don’t know where I’d have been without them rewriting my copy and aggressively door knocking people I spoke to the day before and then selling it all to the Daily Mail.
Although in fairness, I always enjoyed encountering news agency staff, usually a recent media studies graduate on 8 grand a year who’d usually lose bowel control if their boss – usually a wealthy bloke – phoned them for an update. Used to make me feel better about being on 12 grand a year and my boss being based 800 miles away.
