Daredevil reporter set for charity challenge in the sky

Michael JarvisA daredevil reporter is set to take to the skies in a dizzying charity challenge.

Michael Jarvis, pictured left, of the Herts & Essex Observer, will attempt a 10-minute wing walk on an aeroplane, which will see him flying through the sky at speeds of up to 130mph.

All sponsorship money received for the wing walk, due to take place on Saturday 1 August, will be going directly to Moreton Romanian Orphans Fund, which gives disadvantaged children from the Eastern European country in care the chance to experience a loving family environment.

The charity, of which Michael is secretary, organises annual trips to England for 40 to 50 youngsters, who stay with volunteer host families from Hertfordshire and Essex.

Michael’s own family has hosted the same girl, Nicoleta, now 16, since 2009, and will be welcoming a seven-year-old boy called Bogdan for the first time this summer.

The wing walk will not be the first time thrill seeker Michael has taken to the skies in aid of the charity.

In a piece for the Observer, he explained: “In 2010 I (and an experienced parachutist) jumped out of a plane thousands of feet in the air.

“It was one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve ever had, I raised a bucketload of cash for charity and, frankly, I thought I’d conquered the most hair-raising of adrenaline events.

“Five years on, though, I find myself getting pumped again – at the thought of wing walking.”
