Daily wrap celebrates flagship train factory’s opening

A regional daily which campaigned for a train-building factory  to be built on its patch has celebrated its opening by David Cameron with a front page wrap.

The Northern Echo has welcomed the new Hitachi factory in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, which will employ around 800 people.

The wrap on yesterday’s edition, pictured below, coincided with the Prime Minister’s unveiling of the £82m facility, along with an eight-page supplement telling how the Echo and other organisations in the North-East of England came together to bid for the factory.

Editor Peter Barron and deputy editor Chris Lloyd were involved in a number of meetings with Durham County Council and other organisations about the plan to bring the factory to the region.

Peter told HTFP: “It’s probably the most important economic boost for the North-East since the Nissan factory (in Sunderland).

“Hitachi accounts for 800 jobs directly but it’s the supply chain wich grows from that and has the most potential to grow into another flagship for the region.”

Peter added the wrap and supplement had been “very well-received” by readers.

He said: “Every editor would say one of the biggest complaints you get is newspapers are too dominated by bad news, but when something like this happens you’ve really got to celebrate it.

“It’s an example of a newspaper working within its region for the good of the region, and it’s really good news.”

Well said Wazza Snapper, I was about to make that exact same point! Using a large photo wrap on the day you sack your snappers is so ironic it would be hilarious if it wasn’t true!

Great to see that campaigning journalism is alive and well at The Northern Echo.

Good story and fair enough for the Echo to take credit, but how about a photo of celebrating workers (you know, local people) rather than a PR shot of a train. It doesn’t even have the driver leaning out of the window waving a soot-covered cap or anything.
