Seven businesses have come together to pay for two regional daily journalists to cover a local football club’s pre-season tours of Singapore and Germany.
The Sentinel, Stoke, has launched the innovative new venture which will see the companies sponsor a writer and photographer on their travels following Stoke City.
As part of the scheme training news, match reports and interviews from City’s tours will be relayed via custom-made Twitter accounts and the participating firms’ Facebook pages, as well as The Sentinel’s usual channels.
City are set to take part in the Barclays Asia Trophy, in Singapore, and the Colonia Cup, in Germany, over the course of the next month.
Sentinel sports editor Keith Wales said: “This is the first time we have got our sponsors actively involved in helping us spread all the latest news concerning Stoke City.
“Using tailor-made Twitter accounts and the firms’ own Facebook pages, they will be distributing training news, match reports and interviews with fans as soon as our staff are filing them from Singapore and Germany.
“It is a true partnership, and we are really excited about its potential.”
Parcel delivery brand DPD are the principal sponsors, while six other companies based on The Sentinel’s patch are also participating.
I recall sending a writer to Beijing for the Olympics thanks to private sponsorship. The hard bit was when the ad people found out and had their greedy eyes on the revenue. I gave the sponsors a logo on each page daily and the job was a good one. And the reporter in question did a superb job.

Nothing new. The Western Morning News on Sunday is already sponsored…by the Insitute of Duff Marketeers.
