Newspaper commissions mural in tribute to departing football hero

A mural of departing Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard has been commissioned by a regional daily to allow football fans to leave farewell messages for their hero.

The mural, pictured below in progress, has been created for the Liverpool Echo and is set to be completed by the end of this week.

It stands four metres tall and eight metres wide, and is composed of good luck message sent in by supporters to the Echo’s website, Twitter and Facebook pages.

The messages form a composite image of Gerrard in the club’s famous all-red colours.

The finished piece will be displayed at the Liverpool FC Players’ Awards 2015 next Tuesday, while a time-lapse video chronicling the project from start to finish will also air across the Echo’s social media channels.

Gerrard has played 114 times for England and made more than 500 appearances for his hometown club.

He is set to move to move across the Atlantic to join American team Los Angeles Galaxy.

His final home match at Liverpool’s Anfield stadium will take place on Saturday against Crystal Palace FC.

Good move by the Echo. Gerrard is rightly considered an idol on Merseyside. Very good player. Outstanding club stalwart.

Er, that mural…what’s happened to Stevie’s head?

    And his legs.
