A controversial comedian banned a regional daily from reviewing his show after it published negative comments from feminists about his appearance on its patch.
Reviewers from the Liverpool Echo found themselves locked out of Dapper Laughs’ concert in the city, despite an earlier request for coverage from his management.
Dapper, pictured above left, whose real name is Daniel O’Reilly, has faced repeated accusations of sexism in the past and once told a female audience member she was “gagging for rape.”
When Echo reporters arrived at Tuesday night’s gig, they were refused entry by front of house staff who said that the management “did not want the Echo to review the show”.
The journalists were told they would not be allowed access due to the “negative story.”
Mr O’Reilly’s management also blamed a “miscommunication” for the intial request for coverage from the Echo, claiming all reviews of his shows had been embargoed until a forthcoming DVD of his work was released.
The comedian later took to Twitter to criticise “jernos (sic) and feminists”, posting a link to the Echo’s story online.
In a bizarre rant, he added: “Wonder what these journalists would write if I committed suicide because of them. Jokes aside, think about it.”
Echo editor Alastair Machray told HTFP: “Dapper Laughs? The bloke who thought rape was funny? I think the Liverpool Echo can cope without a review of his show.”
Some form of publicity stunt no doubt, he’s about as funny as being forced to walk through ISIS-held territory dressed as Abraham Lincoln.

What a dickminim

Were the FoH staff who prevented Echo staff from entering the venue psychic?
If the editor thought the event worth covering, why didn’t he (or the news desk) simply send a reporter in without trying to blag free entry in exchange for a review?

Fabulous for clickbait though – the twitterstorm will be up near force 12.

I can only echo the very sensible words of Ian Halstead. If you’re that desperate to review a show then buy a ticket. It’s not going to set a precedent for all future reviews if there’s a genuine news angle. And how many reporters does the Echo have if it can spare more than one to attend a simple comedy show – even if you throw in a dreaded vox-pop!

I love comedians with no sense of humour…

I think the ed missed a trick here. Surely it would have been a worthwhile news story to send someone incognito? Maybe he didn’t have a spare reporter.

He is so funny. What a brilliant comedian and long may he continue. He is smart, funny and intelligent who knows how to rile and play the Press, who are continually sucked in to publicise him even more. Pure genius.

Tw*t!
Not the comedian.
The Editor for giving him free publicity.

Great publicity. Sticking one to the feminazis too. If you don’t find him funny, as I don’t, then don’t watch him. Simple choice. Don’t ask for a steak in a sushi bar…

As Margaret Thatcher once said (on a different matter): “Why give these people the oxygen of publicity?”

I like Chris Gage’s comment but the web site won’t let me ‘like’ it.

I’m pretty certain at least half the posters on here are Dapper Laughs.
